I have a new crib and mattress for the baby on the way but I keep hearing about a mattress pad. What is the purpose of this and is it necessary?

i never used a mattress pad. plus why spend extra money if you dont have too. and if your worried about the mattress just put a thin blanket under the sheet.

I would use a water proof mattress pad because it will save the mattress. You will definitely have some leaks and you don’t want your mattress to get ruined. It’s a lot cheaper to wash a soiled mattress pad or even buy another mattress pad than it is to replace a mattress for the crib.

Yes,if you don’t want pee to get soaked in the mattress. But we use plastic

depends on your mattress if you have a plastic coverd mattress i wouldn’t say it is needed but the pad will make it feel warmer and softer if you have a non plastic pad mattress it help protect it from diaper leaks

For a few bucks you will never have to clean a mattress after a leaky diaper!

most crib mattresses have a plastic covering so a pad isn’t necessary for waterproofing, but a pad between the plastic and the sheet is nicer for the baby, because babies tend to make wet spots from both ends, and the thin sheet gets wet and next to the plastic can be uncomfortable. a pad also helps it feel warmer in winter because plastic gets cold so fast and transfers through that thin sheet, and in summer, it is less hot and sticky. pads make it feel softer and cozier, because if you feel that hard plastic mattress, you’d like some padding too. You don’t have to spend a lot, even a thick bath towel will be fine as a pad, but don’t use thick foam, or anything that could contribute to smothering

You use a mattress pad in a crib for the same reason you use one on any bed: they can be washed, and they will absorb various human secretions that otherwise would soak into the mattress and make it disgusting.

it will make your baby more comfortable, and keeps the mattress clean and in good shape

It will help to protect your mattress if your baby’s diaper leaks or baby spits up in the crib.

The mattress pad is just to aid in cleaning. It helps to absorb any wetness and if you are using cotton sheets it makes the bed feel nicer because you can’t feel the vinyl cover.

I just use flannel fitted sheets and I find that works fine. But it is up to your preference. You can usually pick them up pretty cheap, you need two or more because you will be tossing them in the wash pretty regularly.

i have a baby crib, and it has a flat stand but no mattress so i put a nice thick soft blanket for him to sleep on, and its so nice and soft and comfy and he sleeps well too, ive used it on my daughter too, its healthier for their backs.

I suggest a water proof mattress pad.

If your not worried about the mattress being peed on and smelling awful then no. You’ll never get all of the urine out of the mattress because you can’t get inside to clean the inside of it. It’s worth the $20 at walmart to get a good waterproof mattress pad.
